I have applied for a job as a researcher with a local media company. As part of this selection they have asked me to produce this blog for them on the nature and purposes of research for creative media production so or this assignment i am going explain different types of research such as primary research, secondary research, Quantitative research and Qualitative research.
Primary research
Firstly i am going to explain primary research. Primary research is finding out new research by your self this can be done in several ways for example doing questionnaires, surveys, focus groups, observations, Phone calls etc. Basically finding out information by your self and not of the Internet etc is classed as primary research. An example of this being done is finding out how old people may be when smoking and then doing a survey or a questionnaire and gather the information your self.
This is a survey
An survey is a popular way to do primary research. An Advantage of using a survey is that they are quick and cheap to make, however the people you might be trying to gather the information off could be busy and not have the time to fill in the survey being time consuming and expensive. An
advantage of using primary research is that its more reliable and more trust
worthy and you can ask as many questions as you like however a disadvantage is
that making and collecting surveys etc can take more time. Another disadvantage
is that not everyone may have time to be able to fill the survey etc in and
then you’re just wasting more time finding people who actually will fill the
surveys etc in costing more money and wasting more time. Primary research is very important to media company's for many different ways. For example a game company might want to know how old people are most likely to be if they play their game, what kind of games they like e.g if they like horror or puzzle solving games. Also finding out how much they earn and how much they are willing to pay for a game, this will be an advantage because it will give the game design company more of an idea on what their audience are more likely to buy. They might ask how old they are, sex, How often they buy video games. Doing all this will allow the company to collect reliable and helpful information. An media company such as a company in filming etc will find this is an advantage because it allows them to ask their audience/customers questions such as 'how many times do you visit the cinema and how come?' This will allow the company figure out how many people like to go to the cinema and watch films for example if the customer doesn't go to the cinema that much because their isn't any horror films that interest them or If the company ask a server 'What movie genre do you prefer' and a bigger amount say horror films then the company will know that people are most likely to go to the cinema to watch a horror film.Questionnaires can be done over the internet either by email or social media this will be an advantage because this generation is full of people using technology and social websites such as Facebook and twitter so putting an questionnaire up on the internet will be more likely to be filled in and be much easier to collect the data back and be less time consuming.
