In my research i have discovered that there are many different ways to research whether its primary, Secondary, Quantitative or qualitative. Each type has their advantage, disadvantages an differences. For example in primary research they find the information them self this is an advantage because  numerous questions can be asked providing more flexibility an disadvantage is that it will take longer time however with secondary research it is much quicker to find the information but the information could be false on certain websites.

In my opinion media industry are better off using Primary research, Even though it might take much longer to process than secondary research is allows the media industries to do their own research and statistics.

Quantitative research

Quantitative Research
Quantitative research is finding out information by asking closed specific questions which normally result in getting statics or number's as the result. The researcher analyses the data and statics, this is normally suited for finding out questions such as who, where, what etc.Finding out information like that can help an media industry find out if its more female or male who are buying there games. Quantitative research can use both secondary and primary methods.

Here's an good example of quantitative research

This is an video game stats, this shows that 51% of men and only 49% of women play video games and that seven out of ten 16-65 year old game players regularly use a gaming device at least 3 times a week. Information like this is useful for game publishers and developers because it helps them understand who uses their game and how much they use it etc. This will help them have a better understanding on who their target is or who else they might want to start targeting for. For example the game design company might think that they also want women to become more interested in playing their games to bring their gaming stats even up higher, they can do this by doing groups with the female and see what they would be interested in playing as well.

Quantitative research is important to the media industry an depend on it in different ways for example the media industry uses it to compare rating/viewing figure's against other competitive views, shows and programs so the media industry will be able to know whether the viewers liked or hated a new show by having a look at the channels views and see if the channels views goes down or up while the new TV program is on.  Another use of using quantitative research has for media industry is that it allows them to see if people liked a 'new concept' being introduced to the show. Doing this research allows the media industry to have a bigger understand on which shows their audience like, this will help the media industry to class their audiences into 'classes' this is beneficial because this will allow the media to have a wider idea on who is watching and what their interested in. For example if the media industry puts Jeremy Kyle on their show and their views goes it, this will prove that their audience is interested in watching Jeremy Kyle which is for the lower class (group E) who also like watching Eastenders, coronation street, hollyoaks etc.

Qualative research

Qualitative research

Qualitative research is measured more by the quality of something rather than the quantity and asking open questions such as 'why questions' which result in receiving more word data as information from the participants. Qualitative research is used by the researcher finding themes within the answers for example Rock star might ask questions such as "Why do you like Grand theft Auto?" And get answers back like "Well i like the Missions because..." After Rock star got a certain amount of similar answers then rock star will know that the missions are attracting some participants to buy the game and its important for them in grand theft auto to keep the costumers.

Qualitative research is more about finding peoples opinions. This can be done by researchers by doing 1 to 1this is  where the researcher basically asks questions to one participant. An advantage of doing this is that they can see the participants body language/Facial expression's however an disadvantage is that 1 to 1 can be time consuming. Also phone interviews, where the participants are called up and then asked questions an advantage of doing this,  is that its quick and easier to get in contact with the participants. However the participants can hang up on the pone or be to busy to answer. Another way to do qualitative research is focus groups, Focus groups are usually preferred in groups of 10 or fewer individuals. The group will gather to discuss an game or an idea, once they are asked a variety of questions/statements the participants can then share their opinions, ideas or reactions. during focus groups they might also get asked to watch the game and get studied to see how the react for example,

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVkzwA10r4w

This is an reaction of a mum while watching dead space 3 by EA sports. Dead space 3 is suppose to be 'scavenge the violent wilderness, build devastating weapons, and take down the terror together.' The way the mums react while watching dead space 3 supports that the game is going to be violent and make the gamer want to buy and play the game them self.

An advantage of using qualitative research is that the research can be detailed, in-depth and more valid as the participants act as they usually do while making research. The researcher can ask questions that are not fixed plus they look at the viewpoints of a participant rather than the researcher.

Disadvantages is that data can be difficult to record and interpret at a later date this means that it can be time consuming. If the researcher is actively participating they can influence the group or individual so the research might be biased.

Secondary research

Secondary research

Secondary research is gathering the information of websites, books, Journals, Internet, Photo, Library’s, ratings and newspapers etc.  Secondary Research is where someone else has already done it and then you’re getting the information of them.

secondary research is help full towards an media company by allowing them to access websites that shows popular TV programs or movies etc
(http://www.barb.co.UK/whats-new/monthly-top-10?)

Here's an example of most popular episodes watched on E4 of the websites barb  Barb is an website that gathers information to find out how many people watch which program. This will help media to understand what kind of shows their audience might be more into. for example, The 100 is number one TV series on E4 July 14th with 2,051 views while holly-oaks is the 10th most popular TV program with just 1,142 views. This could prove that the genre adventure and more survive etc is more popular then soaps at the moment.

An advantage of using secondary research is that their are a lot of different information available for you within a book.  Or you can collect information from a local library which most large city's  might also have expert assistance available. An other advantage of using the library is that the Liberians will help locate what book your looking  for and let you take the book to work/home. Finding information in the library means the source is more likely to be more reliable as the books are checker for any false information before they are published.
However looking in the library or on the internet etc can be time consuming and make you waste your time trying to find the correct information needed same thing if you need to order and reserve the book as it might take up to weeks for the book to deliver to the library. Another disadvantage, is that i the book your reading is big and is very difficult to find the information then it can be time consuming and take up to a few hours looking through the information.

primary research

Introduction

I have applied for a job as a researcher with a local media company. As part of this selection they have asked me to produce this blog for them on the nature and purposes of research for creative media production so or this assignment i am going explain different types of research such as primary research, secondary research, Quantitative research and Qualitative research.

Primary research

Firstly i am going to explain primary research. Primary research is finding out new research by your self this can be done in several ways for example  doing questionnaires, surveys, focus groups, observations, Phone calls etc. Basically finding out information by your self and not of the Internet etc is classed as primary research. An example of this being done is finding out how old people may be when smoking and then doing a survey or a questionnaire and gather the information your self.
This is a survey
An survey is a popular way to do primary research. An Advantage of using a survey is that they are quick and cheap to make, however the people you might be trying to gather the information off could be busy and not have the time to fill in the survey being time consuming and expensive. An advantage of using primary research is that its more reliable and more trust worthy and you can ask as many questions as you like however a disadvantage is that making and collecting surveys etc can take more time. Another disadvantage is that not everyone may have time to be able to fill the survey etc in and then you’re just wasting more time finding people who actually will fill the surveys etc in costing more money and wasting more time.
Primary research is very important to media company's for many different ways. For example a game company might want to know how old people are most likely to be if they play their game, what kind of games they like e.g if they like horror or puzzle solving games. Also finding out how much they earn and how much they are willing to pay for a game, this will be an advantage because it will give the game design company more of an idea on what their audience are more likely to buy. They might ask how old they are, sex, How often they buy video games. Doing all this will allow the company to collect reliable and helpful information. An media company such as a company in filming etc will find this is an advantage because it allows them to ask their audience/customers questions such as 'how many times do you visit the cinema and how come?' This will allow the company figure out how many people like to go to the cinema and watch films for example if the customer doesn't go to the cinema that much because their isn't any horror films that interest them or If the company ask a server 'What movie genre do you prefer' and a bigger amount say horror films then the company will know that people are most likely to go to the cinema to watch a horror film.Questionnaires can be done over the internet either by email or social media this will be an advantage because this generation is full of people using technology and social websites such as Facebook and twitter so putting an questionnaire up on the internet will be more likely to be filled in and be much easier to collect the data back and be less time consuming.
